Fern Elizabeth (Farmer) Harris, 86, a truly amazing woman, our Mom, our Grandma, our Great Grandmother, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on January 7, 2017 at Desert Regional Hospital in Palm Springs, CA. She was born on June 10, 1930 in Oklahoma to Dave and Irene (Howard) Farmer. They soon moved to Arkansas where she grew up on a farm with her four brothers and sister. Along the way she met a boy..there is always a boy, and then moved here to Indiana.
Fern held many jobs here in Indiana but after graduating from Beauty school she became a well known hairdresser in the community. She was also an active member of the First Missionary Baptist Church and made many life long friends. In all of the years living in Elwood, she was probably best known for walking everywhere, whether it be to the post office, to work, or to volunteer at the church. Let’s not forget her baked delicious-nesses. Let’s be real about her to-die-for peanut butter pies, people, or her pecan rolls and chicken and noodles. All of which she was quick to donate for a church function.
One thing that most people didn’t know about this amazing woman is that she collected clowns. (Yes, CLOWNS!). In her travels, and us kids’ travels, we would be sure to pick up a new souvenir for her. She treasured them as well as all the trinkets that her grandchildren made or gave to her.
Fern is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Dave, Carl, Robert, Daniel, her sister Delana, an infant daughter Carolyn, and Granddaughter Jamie Weeks.
She is survived by her Children, Lawrence Dennis (Sherrie), Betty Dennis Carlson (Don), Gary Harris partner Joseph Flores, and Rachelle Harris Devine (Randy). She is also survived by nine grandchildren Michelle, Stephanie, Lauren, Derrick, Jason, Conner, Chayse, Kenleigh, And Kai as well as four Great Grandchildren, Caleb Hughes, Madison, Elizabeth, Natalie, and Jason Jr.
