Carol Ann (Mitten) Anderson, age 83, of Anderson, Indiana passed away in the home of her son and daughter-in-law on July 14, 2026 after having suffered a stroke and brain bleed seven weeks prior.
Carol was born on October 1, 1942 in East St. Louis, Illinois to Louis Otto and Gladys Marie (Gabehart) Mitten. She graduated high school in Toppenish, Washington and then attended Anderson College (Anderson, IN) obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish in 1964. Later she attained a Master’s degree in Spanish from Ball State University. She taught high school Spanish, English, and English as a Second Language in Indiana, California, Colorado, and Colombia (South America).
Carol married Edwin George Anderson in 1966. They had two children and served as missionaries in Costa Rica and Colombia, and briefly pastored in Yuma, Arizona. They divorced in 1997.
During her almost forty years living in Colorado Springs, Colorado, she continued to be involved in missions through her employment at Compassion International, International Bible Society (now Biblica), and Every Home for Christ, retiring after working at EHC for just over twenty years. She then moved “back home” to Anderson, Indiana.
Having grown up in a Christian home and church, at age 8 she prayed, accepting Jesus Christ’s offer of salvation. Being faithful and active in each church congregation she attended, Carol declared herself to be a child of God who found her fulfillment in Jesus Christ alone. A strong prayer warrior especially in her later years, she kept in touch with people across the country and impacted many through her prayers.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Gladys Mitten, her brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Sharon (Meyer) Mitten, and her sister, Janet (Mitten) Beatty, thus being the last of her family.
Carol is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Dawn (Book) Anderson, her daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Brian Bristol, grandchildren Christy (Anderson) and Levi Scott, Coleman Anderson, Caleb and Faith (Jackson) Anderson, Josiah Bristol, Hannah Bristol, and Sarah Bristol, and great-grandchildren Samuel Scott and Dominic Scott.
A teacher in life, she has chosen to be used to teach in her death. Carol generously donated her body to the Anatomical Education Program at Indiana University School of Medicine. This gift will contribute significantly to the advancement of health science education in the state of Indiana, which benefits the quality of life and care for the living.
A memorial service will take place on Saturday, August 15, 2026 at 4:00PM at South Meridian Church of God, 2402 Meridian St., Anderson, Indiana. For those unable to attend in person, a live stream will be made available at youtube.com/@SouthMeridian.
What an amazing life! A life lived for the Kingdom and her Lord. Lived, but now alive and more alive than ever. May the tears grief and sorrow of each in her family blend with the joy of her eternal life and resolve into blessings of knowing and loving a precious child of God.
She was a beautiful Child of God. A testimony to many and will be so missed.
Carol was an amazing testimony of God‘s love and grace to all of those who knew her. She was always ready with scripture from God‘s Word to encourage, and to help others through hard times. I have been so blessed to have been able to call her friend and enjoy her beautiful smile, and her words of wisdom during this life’s journey. I will miss our phone calls but looking forward to the time when we can walk the streets of gold together and talk. 🥰 No doubt she will fill me in with all the good news that has gone on since she arrived. 😁 Love and Prayers for the family.
I just learned of Carol’s passing. She was my cousin and a beautiful soul. Praying she had a joyous reunion in Heaven with Uncle Louie and Aunt “Shortie” Gladys, as well as Donnie and Jan. May God wrap them all in His precious love.
