Debra Ann Fahrner Nelson Nethercott of Indianapolis, IN passed from this mortal life on December 13, 2019.

Debra was born on April 19, 1952 to Thomas Eugene Fahrner and Glenda Faye Rushton Fahrner in Jacksonville, FL. She attended Decatur Central High School (class of 1970) and earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Ball State University in 1974, a Master of Music Education degree from Indiana University in 1990, and a Master of Vocal Performance degree from Ball State University in 2008. She was also a learned biblical scholar.

Miss Deb, as she was affectionately known by countless choral and piano students, taught for over 40 years. Her career began in Franklin Community Schools and she was the Director of Children’s Music at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church for 25 years. Most recently, she was the director for the novice singers at Christ Church Cathedral. In addition to her choral teaching, Miss Deb taught Kindermusik and scores of piano students in her studio.

Debra and her mother successfully started and operated Deb’s at Meridian Music for many years. Her expertise continued as she managed the print music department of Piano Solutions in the mid 2010s. Debra was also a staff singer in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church choir and Indianapolis Pro Musica for most of the 1990s, travelling twice with the choir to England. She successfully proctored and later managed the Royal School of Church Music course in St. Louis for 20 years. Debra also taught music at Coram Deo Academy and The Summit Academy.

In 1977, Debra married John Nelson and had a daughter, Brooke Suzanne, in 1979. Debra married James Nethercott in 1989 and they celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary on November 21, 2019.

Debra was a dog lover, especially of dachshunds. She enjoyed quirky and eclectic items and shared this love with friends from St. Louis and all who would enter her office at St. Luke’s. Debra was accomplished in knitting and crochet, sharing her creations with friends and relatives.

She is preceded in death by her father, Thomas Fahrner, and her mother, Glenda Cunard, and grandparents Helen and Ervin Rushton and Blanche and William Rushton. She is survived by husband James Nethercott, daughter Brooke Nelson, brother Kyle Fahrner, uncle Jerry Rushton (Nanette), aunts Doris Sorg and Carol Fahrner, and stepfather George Cunard, as well as many cousins.

A memorial service for Debra will be held at St. Paul’s Epsicopal Church, 6050 North Meridian Street, Indianapolis, IN 46208, on January 4, 2020 at 11:00am. Visitation with the family will follow the service.
