Jonathan (Jon) Douglas Akers, age 43, died peacefully at home surrounded by family, friends, and pets in Indianapolis, IN on July 26, 2024; just shy of one year from his diagnosis with glioblastoma.
Jon was born on May 28, 1981 in Kansas City, MO. He was the first child of Gary and Jan Akers. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 2004 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He primarily worked in the Carbon Black industry, and his career took him across the Kansas, Texas, and Louisiana. Jon and his wife, Ashley Meagher, knew each other in college, but a chance reconnection years later led to a relationship, and ultimately engagement in 2017. They were married in 2018 and settled in Indianapolis.
Jon loved to learn, which he demonstrated over the years by learning skills such as massage therapy, cheesemaking, cooking, and wine pairing. He was an avid gamer and played numerous video games, particularly World of Warcraft, Dota 2, Death Stranding, and Elden Ring. His fandom of Dota 2 extended to attending multiple International Championships and streaming his favorite Twitch players. Above all, Jon put the needs of others above his own and never wanted attention on his accomplishments or generosity.
Jon is survived by his wife, Ashley Meagher, his parents Gary and Jan Akers, his brother and sister-in-law Paul and Victoria Akers, his grandmother Lillian Mueller, sister-in-law Brittany Meagher and Adam Trimble, and brother-in-law David and Sonya Meagher as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is also survived by his dog, Archduke Riki Von Maximus of Nyx, and cat, Dark Willow, Sorceress Supreme. He was preceded in death by his cat, Jasper, and planned to reconnect with him in the ethereal realm.
Special thanks to Karen Natoli, Dr. Kathryn Nevel and the Indiana University Health Neuro-Oncology team, and AseraCare Home Hospice.
Jon generously donated his body to the Anatomical Education Program at Indiana University School of Medicine. His gift will contribute significantly to the advancement of health science education in the state of Indiana. Those, like Jon, who decide to bequeath their bodies to the health science have made a significant contribution that benefits the quality of life and care for the living.
Jon had a celebration of life prior to his death in May, and no services are planned. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jon’s memory can be made to Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana, your local food bank, or IndyHumane Society.
