Wayne Morris Hershman, 69, of Summitville, passed away on Monday, April 3, 2023 at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis after battling an illness for more than two years.. He was born in Greenfield, Indiana on January 28, 1954 to George Hershman and Mary (Cox) Hershman.

Wayne graduated from Mt. Vernon High School (1972) and was a member of the Westland Friends Church in Greenfield.

He was a very talented mechanic who had a passion for working on airplanes and race cars. After years of flying, racing Funny Cars, and competing in Top Fuel Dragsters, Wayne realized that he had a mechanical gift. He became very distinguished in his field; Wayne held FAA Certifications as both a Mechanic and an Inspector. He served as the Director of Maintenance for Tom Wood Aviation for 24 years where he lived his dream of, among other things, maintaining vintage World War II fighter planes.

Wayne is survived by his brother, Thomas (Rosalie) Hershman of Cedar City, UT; several nieces and nephews; and many loving friends and colleagues.

He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, William and Richard Hershman; his sister, Janet Ledbetter; and his friend, Mary Johnson.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM on Wednesday, April 12th, 2023 at Tom Wood Aviation (9917 Willow View Road, Fishers, IN 46038) on the grounds of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Airport.

A funeral service will be conducted at 10:00am on Thursday, April 13, 2023, at Westland Friends Church (6980 E. 300 South, Greenfield, IN 46140) with Pastor Phil Abram officiating. Committal will follow at the Westland Friends Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Vernon High School’s Aviation Program (1806 W. SR 234, Fortville, IN 46040).
